How to Make Doughnuts Without Frying: A Guilt-Free Breakfast Treat

Do you love doughnuts but hate the guilt of eating fried food?

If so, you will love this recipe for non-fried doughnuts made with a waffle maker. These doughnuts are soft, fluffy, and delicious, without any oil or deep frying. They are also easy to make with simple and wholesome ingredients. Plus, you can customize them with your favourite toppings, such as melted chocolate, powdered sugar, or jam.

To make these doughnuts, you will need a waffle maker that has a doughnut plate. This is a special attachment that allows you to make round-shaped waffles with holes in the middle. You can find it online or in some kitchen stores. If you don’t have one, you can still make these doughnuts with a regular waffle maker, but they will look more like mini waffles. I use a Silver Crest waffle and sandwich maker from Lidl. It is a very affordable piece and works really well. Mine has been in use for years. Just make sure not to use any metal appliance when taking the waffles out as it can damage the plate and becomes sticky (I know it from experience)

I had to try these new plates and since I had some ripe bananas at home I came up with this recipe. Turned out to be perfect, even after days they are fresh in an airtight container in the fridge. They are light, sweetened mostly naturally, and they are ideal as breakfast or a snack option.

Instead of chocolate coating you can use your other favourite coating of leave them without and eat the doughnuts with fresh fruit and jam or yoghurt.

If you don´t have a doughnut plate you can make waffles instead.

My recipe

The ingredients for these doughnuts are:

  • 150 gr flour (I used wholegrain spelt)

  • 50 gr millet flakes (can be replaced with oat or other flakes)

  • 2 small ripe bananas

  • 1 egg

  • 25 gr unsweetened almond butter

  • 1 tbsp coconut sugar or erythritol

  • 30 gr coconut oil

  • aprox 75 ml water

These ingredients are not only tasty, but also healthy and nutritious. Here are some of the benefits of some of them:

  • Wholegrain spelt flour is a type of ancient wheat that has more protein, fiber, and minerals than regular wheat flour. It also has a nutty flavor and a light texture.

  • Millet flakes are made from millet, a gluten-free grain that is rich in antioxidants, magnesium, and iron. Millet flakes can help lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels.

  • Bananas are a great source of potassium, vitamin C, and fiber. They also add natural sweetness and moisture to the doughnuts.

  • Almond butter is a creamy and delicious spread made from ground almonds. It contains healthy fats, protein, calcium, and vitamin E. Almond butter can help lower cholesterol, improve skin health, and prevent diabetes.

  • Coconut sugar and erythritol are natural sweeteners that have a low glycemic index and fewer calories than regular sugar. They can help prevent cavities, inflammation, and weight gain .

  • Coconut oil is a plant-based oil that has medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are easily digested and used as energy by the body. Coconut oil can boost metabolism, brain function, and immunity.

Preparation:

1. In a medium bowl smash the bananas with a fork, add the egg, the sugar, the almond butter, andthe coconut oil, mix them well.

2. Add to the mix the flour and the flakes, then start to add in the water. The amount of the water might need adjusting, depending on the flour you use. You want to have a thick pancake-like batter.

3. Heat up your waffle maker, scoop in about just enough batter so the bottom plate fills, close the top and cook till lightly brown

4. Once cooled I coated them with 80% melted dark chocolate, but you can use others or eat them without coating.

Enjoy your non-fried doughnuts with a cup of coffee or tea. They are perfect for breakfast, snack, or dessert. You can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze them for longer.

I hope you liked this recipe and give it a try. Let me know how it turned out in the comments below. And don’t forget to share this post with your friends who love doughnuts but want to eat healthier.

With much love,
