Ditch the Sugar, Keep the Joy: My Healthy Homemade Nutella Recipe

Why I Said Goodbye to Nutella (and Never Looked Back)

I used to love Nutella. I could easily eat half a jar in one go, spoonful after spoonful. It was my guilty pleasure—until my body started showing signs that this so-called "treat" wasn’t treating me well at all.

In my early 20s, I struggled with awful skin issues—painful breakouts that didn’t just affect my appearance but also my self-esteem. After trying countless skincare products with no success, I decided to take a different approach: I did a sugar detox.

I cut out processed foods, refined sugars, and artificial ingredients, replacing them with fresh fruits, veggies, clean water, fiber, and healthy fats.

Within weeks, something amazing happened. Not only did my skin completely clear up, but my energy levels stabilized, my mind felt clearer, and my painful cycles disappeared. I no longer had those dreadful sugar crashes, and best of all? I didn't crave sugar the way I used to.

I tried Nutella again after that—just one spoonful. But instead of the chocolatey goodness I used to love, all I could taste was sugar. It felt like my lips were glued together. The appeal was gone. And once I learned about the other harmful ingredients lurking in that jar, I knew it was something I wanted to keep far away from my life—and my kids' lives too.

But here’s the thing: I don’t believe in restriction, especially when it comes to kids. Food should be joyful, fun, and nourishing. So I set out on a mission to create a chocolate spread that I could give my children without hesitation—one that not only tastes amazing but also nurtures their minds and bodies.

And some experimentation, I finally found the one.

What’s Really in Store-Bought Nutella?

Most people don’t realize that Nutella is over 50% sugar. In fact, the first two ingredients on the label are sugar and palm oil—not hazelnuts or cacao like you’d expect.

This high sugar content, along with unhealthy fats and artificial ingredients, can have serious consequences, especially for kids:

🚨 Blood sugar spikes & crashes – leading to tantrums, mood swings, and cravings.
🚨 Gut health issues – processed foods can disrupt digestion and cause inflammation.
🚨 Long-term risks – increased chances of obesity, diabetes, and metabolic disorders.

But the good news? You don’t have to give up chocolate spreads entirely—you just need a better alternative.

My Healthy Homemade Nutella

Over the years, I’ve played around with different versions of chocolate spreads, but this one is my absolute favorite. Instead of hazelnuts, I use avocado as the creamy base, along with a mix of carob and cacao powder for a deep, rich chocolate flavor.

Why This Recipe Works:

🥑 Avocado: Provides a silky-smooth texture and healthy fats for brain function.
🌱 Carob Powder: Naturally sweet, caffeine-free, and high in calcium—making it a perfect option for kids!
🍬 Dates: A fiber-rich natural sweetener that also adds a luscious consistency.

The Recipe

🍴 Ingredients:
✔️ 5 dates, soaked in 100 ml hot water
✔️ 1 medium avocado
✔️ 2 tbsp carob powder
✔️ 1 tbsp cacao powder

🥣 Instructions:
1️⃣ Soak the dates in hot water for about 10 minutes to soften.
2️⃣ Blend the dates with the water until smooth.
3️⃣ Add in the avocado, carob powder, and cacao powder.
4️⃣ Blend until creamy. Enjoy immediately or store in the fridge for later!

💡 Tip: This spread is perfect on whole-grain sourdough toast, pancakes, or as a fruit dip.
